Chances are that your DVDs contain a little extra in the bonus features department! Many discs contain additional hidden features, or Easter Eggs, buried away within the menu screens, often showing as a special icon highlight. They can reveal anything from an additional quick clip or gagreel, to a lengthy interview or entire section of further supplemental material! The name derives from the traditional hiding of gifts and treats that need searching for, just like these bonuses: some easy to spot and some sneaky and well hidden – hence the name Easter Eggs!
Finding the Dinosaur DVD Easter Eggs:Walt Disney Home Entertainment (January 30 2001), Region 1
As well as the extensive bonus features on this early 2-disc Disney release, there’s even more substantial material to be found!
On Disc Two, locate the feature The Production Process, which offers up a list of options. Press the Right arrow key on your remote to highlight a dinosaur skeleton head and select Enter for a five-minute excerpt from Disneyland Goes To The World Fair, originally shown May 17 1964.
In the Creating The Characters section, press the Right key to highlight another dino-head and press Enter to see some Render Bugs: a selection of scenes in which the computers decided to play with the code so that the animation didn’t come out as planned!
There’s another dinosaur head to be found in Development. When the head is selected this time, you’ll see a six-minute clip from The History Of The Animated Drawing, a Walt Disney-hosted episode from 1955 in which Walt introduces a recreation of Winsor McCay’s Gertie The Dinosaur vaudeville act.
Finally, in the Publicity options, there’s another dino-head which hides perhaps the most fun bonus of all: selecting it plays the full, 12-minute, ultra-rare animated educational Disney short Recycle Rex from 1992, written by Irene Mecchi!
